The museum was founded by the Decision of Krasnopolye District Council of People's Deputies on 28 November 1991. It was opened for visitors in 1994 in the former building of a district communication center. The general collection of museum (by 1 January 2014) is 3,400 items, and the research additional collection includes 406 items. The most considerable collections are: numismatics, faleristics, weaponry, photos, folk towels, and folk clothes. The museum features exhibitions on the effects of the Chernobyl disaster, local theater history, and ethnographic life.
