Karkkila Ironworks Museum: The Högfors Blast Furnace

Högfors blast furnace founded in 1820 was used to produce crude iron from iron ore that was excavated from Kulonsuonmäki mine in Karkkila. Additional iron ore was also lifted from the lakes in Loppi and Tammela. Gradually the production rates dropped and the blast furnace was last used in iron production in 1915. The blast furnace was left in ruins until Finnish Heritage Agency began the restoration process in the end of the 20th century. The wooden parts of the blast furnace were rebuilt and old industrial milieu was restored in the surrounding area.
