Instituto de Pesquisa e Memória Pretos Novos

The Instituto de Pesquisa e Memória Pretos Novos, founded on 13 May 2005, is dedicated to researching and preserving African and Afro-Brazilian material and intangible heritage, with particular focus on the Cemitério dos Pretos Novos (Cemetery of the New Blacks) in the Gamboa neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. This archaeologically significant site, where enslaved Africans who died shortly after arrival were buried, is one of the most important memorials to the Atlantic slave trade in Brazil.
