The Cripta del Peccato Originale (Crypt of Original Sin) near Matera, Basilicata, Italy, is a Byzantine-era rupestrian crypt featuring remarkable 8th–9th century frescoes attributed to the "Painter of Matera Flowers." Known as the "Sistine Chapel of rupestrian art," the crypt served as a worship space within a Benedictine monastic community during the Lombard period and depicts scenes including the Creation, the Annunciation, and archangels. Advance reservations are mandatory.
