La Cripta del Peccato Originale, near Matera in Basilicata, is a Lombard-era rupestrian Benedictine cult site renowned as the "Sistine Chapel of the Rupestrian art." Its walls are decorated with a remarkable cycle of 8th–9th-century frescoes by the Painter of the Flowers of Matera, depicting the Apostles, the Virgin Queen and the Archangels alongside scenes including the original sin. Visits are by reservation only and tickets allow reduced-price access to MUSMA and Casa di Ortega within seven days.
