Cattedrale di Santa Maria (Cagliari)
The Cathedral of Santa Maria in Cagliari, Sardinia, was originally built in 1254 within the walls of Castel di Castro and elevated to a cathedral in 1313. The structure measures 35m to the choir, 34m wide in the transepts and 32m high at the dome. Originally built in Gothic-Romanesque style, the cathedral was reduced to typical Genoese Baroque forms by Domenico Spotorno from 1669 to 1674. Beneath the presbytery lies the Sanctuary of the Martyrs (Crypt of Archbishop Francisco Desquivel), excavated from rock and decorated with rare Sicilian-style Baroque stuccoes from 1618.
