Museo Diocesano di Cosenza

Museo Diocesano di Cosenza presents the sacred art heritage of the Archdiocese of Cosenza-Bisignano, with a collection focused on the Cathedral and its surrounding territory. The permanent display follows a path through liturgical furnishings showing the stylistic evolution of sacred metalwork from the 17th to the 20th century, liturgical vestments, and wooden sculpture. A highlight is the Cathedral Treasury, which includes the Stauroteca — a Byzantine gold reliquary cross of great historical and artistic importance — and the sacred icon of the Madonna del Pilerio, the patron of Cosenza, displayed alongside a study of its iconography and its devotional copies. A further section examines the painters and sculptors active in the Cathedral from the 17th and 18th centuries, documenting the artistic culture of southern Calabria in the early modern period.
