Duomo di Salerno

The Cattedrale di Salerno (Duomo di Salerno) — the Basilica Cattedrale Primaziale Metropolitana di Santa Maria degli Angeli, San Matteo e San Gregorio VII — was founded by Robert Guiscard, with the crypt inaugurated in 1081 and the church consecrated by Pope Gregory VII in 1084. Modelled on the Abbey of Montecassino, it has a basilical plan with three naves, a transept and a quadriportico of 28 columns. The interior reflects the Baroque restructuring after the 1688 earthquake (Arcangelo Guglielmelli and Carlo Buratti) and houses works including Solimena's San Gennaro, Byzantine bronze doors and the relics of Saint Matthew the Evangelist.
