Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot
The Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot is the only museum in France dedicated to the philosopher and encyclopedist Denis Diderot, who was born in Langres. Housed in the elegant 16th- and 18th-century Hôtel Du Breuil de Saint-Germain, the museum explores Diderot's life and work in the context of the Age of Enlightenment. Highlights include original editions of the Encyclopédie, sculptures by Houdon and Bartholdi, and paintings by Chardin and Greuze. The museum also examines Diderot's complex relationship with his hometown, his contribution to intellectual revolution, and his connections with figures such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Catherine II. Ancient instruments and maps illustrate 18th-century scientific progress.
