Centre For Rupert's Land Studies
The Centre for Rupert's Land Studies (CRLS) at The University of Winnipeg facilitates scholarly research and publishing concerning the human history of the Hudson Bay watershed - known as Rupert's Land between 1670 and 1870. CRLS supports research in Indigenous and fur trade history, hosts biennial colloquia, publishes the Rupert's Land Newsletter, promotes awareness of the Hudson's Bay Company Archives, awards an annual Harington Fellowship, and houses a non-lending library and reading room. Originally formed in 1984 as the Hudson's Bay Company Archives Research Centre, the Centre took its current form in 1996 under the direction of Dr. Jennifer S.H. Brown and has co-published, with McGill-Queen's University Press, a series of documentary volumes on the region's history.
