The Kauri Museum Matakohe
The award winning Kauri Museum is located approximately 90 minutes drive north of Auckland. With truly stunning collections the Kauri Museum offers something that is like no other, and will amaze all with its selection galleries and collections of pioneering life. With over 4500 sqm of undercover exhibits the Kauri Museum is the largest undercover attraction in Northland, with the unique theme of the mighty kauri, the worlds second largest tree. Displays include the biggest collection of kauri gum and kauri furniture worldwide; a fully furnished c1910 kauri boarding house with realistic models of significant local people. Our Volunteers Hall features a huge 22 metre long kauri slab and some of our magnificent photograph collection. The Kauri Museum gives a fascinating insight into what life was like for those involved in the kauri industries crucial to New Zealand's economic beginnings. The Kauri Museum is a true masterpiece.
