Welcome to the Te Whare Taoka o Waitaki/Waitaki Museum & ​Archive. Our museum reflects the natural and social history of the Waitaki District.

Situated in the 1882 historic Athenaeum Building. Waitaki Museum tells the stories of the natural and cultural history of the Waitaki District with 5 new exhibition spaces:

Our Land Tō Tātau Whenua: a sample of Waitaki district’s geology, celebrating our status as a UNESCO Geopark.

Kā Puipuiaki o Korotuaheka: discover the Waitaha Taoka | Stewart Willetts Family Collection.

European Settlement: stories of the arrival of European settlers in the Waitaki District.

Ballad of the Waitaki: our last 100 years, connecting the now to our deeper past.

Temporary Exhibition Space: Rotating exhibitions on a variety of subjects, both travelling and from our own collection.

The Waitaki District Archive is used by genealogists and historians from throughout New Zealand and houses documents and photos from the Waitaki region.
