the Charlotte Museum Te Whare Takatāpui-Wāhine o Aotearoa

The Charlotte Museum Te Whare Takatāpui-Wāhine is a non-profit charitable trust whose primary objective is to collect, preserve and exhibit lesbian sapphic herstory and the histories of Aotearoa's diverse lesbian communities and our shared lesbian cultural experience. We also know that lesbian sapphic herstory overlaps and is intertwined with the histories of our diverse rainbow communities so we are also activiely collecting on behalf of all our diverse rainbow+queer communities.

We aim to: - preserve our cultural heritage by collecting objects, items and ephemera about lesbian sapphic herstory and cultural experience. - advocate for preserving our cultural heritage by networking with lesbian sapphic and rainbow archives and museums in Aotearoa and overseas. - continue to grow and provide access to our collections via display and exhibition, and online, being at all times conscious that other institutions are not collecting the herstory or cultural heritage of our communities, or are only doing so selectively. - continue to grow The Saphira Research Library and Document Archive that is held at the museum. And enable our reference library and archive to be used for the research of topics about Aotearoa's lesbian sapphic and wider rainbow communities and our cultural experience. The library has a particularly focus on reference books about lesbian sapphic herstory and cultural experience, feminism, the women's movements and rights, as well as lesbian sapphic publications, periodicals and journals produced in Aotearoa and research materials including papers, doctorates, thesis that have lesbian sapphic content relevant to the Aotearoa experience.
