The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum
The museum is constructed around a vintage railway and a village concept consisting of buildings and displays from the early days of the Mid Canterbury region.The rural history section involves traction engines, vintage tractors,oil engines and vintage farm machinery.
The railway runs along a 2.5 km along the former Springburn/Mt Somers branch. Loco's include a 1939 diesel Vulcan Railcar RM50,steam loco's K 88 'Washington' built by Rogers in 1877, a 1952 Hillside built 110 ton ex NZR Ja 1260 and a 1873 Dubs A 64 . Also several ex-New Zealand Railways carriages and wagons and a few vintage diesel shunters .
The focus is on restoration and presentation of working history with steam and diesel trains running; the village setting and the old cottage, blacksmiths and print shop, traction engines, tractors and vintage farm machinery.
