Western Bay Museum
Ki ngā hau o ngā tini, ki ngā hau o ngā mano, Ki ngā hau e whā! Nau mai haere mai ki te whare pupuri taonga a Western Bay Museum.
To the many winds, to the multitudes, and to the four winds. Welcome to Western Bay Museum.
Established in 2016, Western Bay Museum is in Katikati at the northern end of Tauranga Moana, and sits within the cultural landscape shaped by the three local hapū: Ngāi Tamawhariua, Ngāti Te Wai, and Te Whānau ā Tauwhao. These hapū, along with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tamawhariua, provide the cultural foundation and authority for the Museum’s engagement in this region.
The Western Bay Museum’s charitable purpose is to conserve, preserve, rehome, catalogue and display items of relevance from the past as taonga, and tell the stories of those who call our place 'home'.
Each year we create and host exhibitions, programmes and activities that bring in over 14,000 visitors per annum (local, regional, national and international visitors from over sixty countries and counting).
We are proud to be part of our community and invite you to visit to experience and share all that we offer.
