Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández

The Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández is Buenos Aires' leading museum dedicated to Argentine folk art and traditional craftsmanship. Named after the poet who authored the gaucho epic Martín Fierro, the MAP houses an extensive collection of artisanal objects from across Argentina's diverse regions — textiles, ceramics, leatherwork, silver mates, woven baskets, carved wood, indigenous masks, and traditional costumes. The museum highlights the cultural identities of different Argentine communities through their artisanal traditions and hosts educational programmes, guided tours, workshops, and regular artisan fairs. The MAP also maintains the AMCA — Archivo de la Memoria del Campo Artesanal — a living archive documenting the voices and stories of contemporary Argentine artisans.
