Benediktinerstift Göttweig

Göttweig Abbey is a Benedictine monastery towering at 422 m above sea level on the eastern edge of the Wachau region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 founded in 1083 and given to the Benedictines in 1094. Often called the "Austrian Montecassino", it features the largest baroque staircase in Europe with Paul Troger's 1739 ceiling fresco, designed by imperial court architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. The Abbey Museum is the oldest museum in Lower Austria, with princely and imperial rooms displaying the abbey's art collections and changing special exhibitions.
