Benediktinerstift Altenburg
Stift Altenburg is a Benedictine abbey with foundations dating back to the 12th century, known as the "Baroque Jewel of the Waldviertel" for its rich frescoes by Paul Troger. Visitors can explore the abbey, library, crypt, "Monastery beneath the Monastery" (the medieval foundations including a scriptorium, chapter house and cloister), the Sala Terrena and themed gardens. The Imperial Wing houses a gallery with the Arnold Collection - Austria's largest private Baroque collection - and the Sainitzer Collection of baroque devotional images.
