The Nature and Science Museum is one of the oldest university-affiliated museums that started from the foundation of an exhibition room for silk-related samples and objects in the research laboratory for silkworm diseases established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce in 1886 (the 19th year of Meiji). Since its founding – the original laboratory has undergone a transition to a Sericulture Institute and Textile College and is now a University – the Museum has been a place to exhibit the past and present research achievements and manage historical collections.
