Meiji Jingu Gaien (The Meiji Jingu Outer Precinct) was erected to honor the memories of the Emperor and Empress in 1926, at the location where the funeral ceremony for Emperor Meiji was conducted. The paintings depicting the achievements of the Emperor and Empress, that are literally the history of Meiji Era from 1868 to 1912, are displayed inside the gallery in chronological order. The design for the Meiji The building is highly appreciated and recognized as an early example of art galleries in Japan. In June 2011 it was designated as a national important cultural property.
