Kasematy

The Kasematy (casemates) beneath Špilberk Castle in Brno are a network of underground prison corridors and cells that once held the most dangerous criminals and political prisoners from across the Habsburg Empire. Known as the 'dungeon of nations', Špilberk's casemates were among the most feared prisons in Central Europe from the 17th to 19th centuries. Today the Kasematy form part of the Muzeum města Brna (Brno City Museum) and are open to visitors as a haunting historical monument.
