With a history of more than 100 years, it has grown from the Historical Museum of the City of Harburg into the Archaeological State Museum of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The main house on Museumsplatz hosts changing special exhibitions on archaeology from the Old and New Worlds, while the permanent archaeological exhibition is located at Harburger Rathausplatz.
