Museo Capilla del Hombre
La Capilla del Hombre is the crowning work and legacy of Ecuador's greatest painter, Oswaldo Guayasamín (1919–1999). Located in the Bellavista neighbourhood of Quito, the monumental building — designed by Guayasamín himself — was conceived as a temple to humanity, a permanent testament to the suffering, dignity, and resilience of Latin America's indigenous and mestizo peoples. The interior walls are covered with vast murals documenting five centuries of exploitation and resistance, from the Spanish conquest to modern political oppression. The museum houses Guayasamín's most important series of paintings, including Huacayñán and La Edad de la Ira, as well as pre-Columbian and colonial art from his personal collection. His ashes are interred beneath a fig tree in the courtyard.
