Jakarta History Museum
The Jakarta History Museum (Museum Sejarah Jakarta) is housed in the former Stadhuis — the City Hall of Batavia — located on Taman Fatahillah square in the historic Kota Tua (Old Town) area. The building was constructed in 1707 during the VOC era and inaugurated in 1710 by Governor General Abraham van Riebeeck. Opened as a museum on 30 March 1974, it serves as a centre for collection, conservation, and research into objects of cultural heritage relating to the history of Jakarta, from prehistory to the early 20th century. Highlights include a replica of the Tugu Inscription from the era of King Purnawarman of the Tarumanegara Kingdom, a 16th-century map, Portuguese Padrao monument replica, a bronze cannon from the Jayakarta period, and an internationally significant collection of Betawi-style furniture from the 17th–19th centuries reflecting the multicultural heritage of Batavia. Taman Fatahillah square and its surroundings were declared a Cultural Property in 1970.
