Waterford Treasures - Reginald's Tower

Reginald's Tower is a four story stone tower that originally formed part of the city's medieval defences. The first tower on the site would have been a wooden tower built by the Vikings however this was replaced by the first two floors of the current structure in the late 12th century (shortly after the Normans captured Waterford). The upper two floors were added in the late 15th century. Down through the years the tower has served many functions including defence, as a mint, a prison, a residence and a museum. It has never fallen into ruin and is the iconic face of Waterford's long and rich history. Today the tower is a National Monument and is managed by the Office of Public Works. It houses an exhibition detailing the history of the structure and it also houses the Viking Treasures of Waterford.
