Basilica di San Lorenzo (Firenze)
The Basilica of San Lorenzo is one of the largest and most ancient churches in Florence, deeply tied to the Medici family who governed Florence and Tuscany for over 300 years. Tradition holds that the first basilica was consecrated to Saint Ambrose in 393 and dedicated to the martyr Lorenzo; the present church is the result of radical renovations begun in 1418 by Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici. The Mediceo Laurenziano complex includes the Basilica, the Old Sacristy, the Cloisters, the Saint Lawrence Treasure, the Medici Chapels, and the Medicea Laurenziana Library.
