The monumental complex of Santa Croce in Florence is one of the most important Franciscan churches in Italy and the burial place of many leading Italian artists, scientists and statesmen, including Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Property of the Fondo Edifici di Culto and the City of Florence, it is managed by the Opera di Santa Croce, which has cared for the basilica, its chapels, cloisters and museum spaces since the 14th century. Visitors can explore the basilica, the Pazzi Chapel, the cloisters and the museum housing major works including those by Giotto, Cimabue and Vasari.
