Hayes Engineering Works

Hayes Engineering Works and Homestead is a remarkable preserved industrial heritage site in Oturehua, Central Otago, cared for by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. Founded by inventor Ernest Hayes in 1895, the works produced agricultural implements, fencing tools and innovative engineering products that were exported worldwide. Today visitors can tour the original workshop with its leather-belt-driven machinery and the family homestead, gaining insight into early 20th century rural ingenuity and the lives of the Hayes family.
