In early 1985, a group of local residents decided to save a portion of the original Cromwell before it was inundated by the new hydro electricity storage unit of Lake Dunstan. Seven of the buildings were moved and have been reconstructed and an existing building restored. The precinct is open daily and provides a unique attraction and a setting for local artisans, cottage industries and special events.
