Museum of Rīga’s History and Navigation
The rich collection of the Museum of Rīga’s History and Navigation is based on the private collection of Rīgan doctor Nikolaus von Himsel, which was donated to the city. In 1773, the City Council founded the Himsel Museum. In 1791, it was moved to the Rīga Dome Church ensemble. In the centuries that followed, the museum became a vast repository of Latvia’s cultural and historical heritage. At present, its stock comprises more than 600,000 items, systematically arranged in 75 collections.
The museum’s display is arranged in 16 showrooms to tell the story of Rīga and its residents and trace the development of navigation in Latvia at different times in history. The Column Hall, built in 1778, is a shining pearl of neoclassical architecture. The Silver Cabinet displays the most exquisite valuables from the museum’s precious metal collection. A chance to “meet” the ancient symbol of Rīga, the 17th-century sculpture of Giant Kristaps (Big Christopher), promises a special treat for visitors.
The museum offers guided tours, educational tours for pupils and a special programme for newlyweds. The facilities may be rented for conferences, concerts, wedding ceremonies and other festive occasions.
