Mausoleum of Njegoš

The Mausoleum of Njegoš (Njegošev mauzolej) is a monumental monument to Petar II Petrović-Njegoš (1813–1851), the celebrated Montenegrin prince-bishop, philosopher, and poet. Built in 1974 on the summit of Lovćen at an altitude of 1,660 metres, the mausoleum was designed by the renowned Yugoslav architect and sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It replaced an earlier chapel and was commissioned to honour the centenary of Njegoš's death. Visitors reach the mausoleum through a tunnel and up 461 steps carved into the mountain. The interior houses a monumental sculpture of Njegoš and offers panoramic views over Montenegro. The mausoleum is part of the National Museum of Montenegro complex.
