SS Luciston

SS Luciston (also known as Luciston Collier) is a World War I historic shipwreck site. Colliers are cargo ships designed to transport coal between ports and coal-burning ships. Built in 1910 by R. Duncan & Co Ltd, of Glasgow, Scotland, the SS Luciston had an overall length of 98.4m and a beam of 25m. By the outbreak of the First World War, approximately 850 vessels were acting as colliers, supply vessels and auxiliaries to the British Admiralty . The demand for coal would remain a constant throughout the conflict, and the number of colliers in service would reflect this. Colliers were continually under threat by German submarines , reflected in the number sunk, with losses estimated at around 253 . Particularly heavy losses were recorded in 1917. This is also mirrored in the registered number of collier losses around the Maltese Islands. Royal Navy records indicated that 12 colliers were sunk in the central Mediterranean, over half of which were lost in 1917 . Towards the latter par
