SS Luciston

SS Luciston (also known as Luciston Collier) is a World War I historic shipwreck site. Colliers are cargo ships designed to transport coal between ports and coal-burning ships. Built in 1910 by R. Duncan & Co Ltd, of Glasgow, Scotland, the SS Luciston had an overall length of 98.4m and a beam of 25m. By the outbreak of the First World War, approximately 850 vessels were acting as colliers, supply vessels and auxiliaries to the British Admiralty . The demand for coal would remain a constant throughout the conflict, and the number of colliers in service would reflect this. Colliers were continually under threat by German submarines , reflected in the number sunk, with losses estimated at around 253 . Particularly heavy losses were recorded in 1917.
