ICOM was established in 1946, and is a non-governmental organization that has official relations with UNESCO and consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. ICOM implements part of UNESCO's museum program. The headquarters of ICOM is located in Paris, where the secretariat and the museum information center of UNESCO-ICOM are also located.
