The Association of Museums in Slovakia was founded in 1990 as a professional interest association of museums in the Slovak Republic (interest association of legal entities). The seat of this independent legal entity is the city of Banská Bystrica. The main mission of the Association is to represent museums, to promote, defend and develop their common rights and interests and to support museology in Slovakia. As part of its mission, the ZMS represents, defends and promotes the interests of its members externally, especially in relation to their founders, participates in the preparation of legal regulations and development concepts of museology and applies the professional interests of museums. ZMS monitors and enforces compliance with the principles of the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums, implements or participates in the implementation of various forms of education and presentation activities of museums, carries out editorial and publication activities, comprehensively promotes and popularizes the activities of the association and its members.
